For my Summer Scholars project, I explored phenomenology in architecture by studying the work of American architect Bart Prince. Phenomenology, in this context, refers to the way individuals experience space and how design shapes their perception of their surroundings. I visited four of Prince’s residences in the southwestern U.S., including his home studio, where I had the opportunity to interview him about his design philosophy. The project focused on how Prince’s organic and unconventional structures evoke a sensory experience, creating a deep connection between the occupant and their environment. This research culminated in an exhibit that showcased how his designs bring the concept of phenomenology to life.
